Welcome to the VOLTA
This building houses research activities within the Department of Electromechanics, Systems, and Metal Engineering. We specialize in electrical energy, motion and control.
Alongside the EELab, you'll also find other fascinating research groups and partnerships, such as Flanders Make and the MST.

From Robotic Dogs to Race Cars
Here, it’s not just about teaching; there’s always intriguing research happening as well. For instance, Prof. Peter Sergeant and the research team of Prof. Soete are working on the UGent Racing Team's solar car, focusing on the electric motor with innovative 3D-printed coils. Meanwhile, Thijs Van Hauwermeiren is developing a tactile leg for a robotic dog, enabling it to sense and respond to its surroundings.
Department of Electromechanics, Systems and Metal Engineering
The Department of Electromechanics, Systems, and Metal Engineering is located in multiple buildings at Ardoyen (buildings 131, but also 60, 46, 121) and outside the park.

UGent Racing
The EELab is contributing to an exciting project: the university’s first self-driving electric race car. UGent Racing, the Formula Student team, brings together students from various disciplines to design and build this innovative vehicle. By participating in this project, students get the chance to turn their theoretical knowledge into practical experience, all while promoting a more sustainable future and enhancing hands-on learning in higher education. And here's something cool: some of the parts for this car were made right here in this building!
